Manchester United are ‘very uncertain’ over which direction to go in when it comes to appointing their next permanent manager, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Red Devils hired current boss Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and he’s expected to take up a consultancy role in the summer.

Several intriguing names have been linked with filling the Old Trafford hotseat on a long-term basis, including current Paris Saint-Germain head coach Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag of Ajax.

According to ESPN, Pochettino was the ‘favoured candidate’ to succeed Solskjaer after he was relieved of his duties November, but he ended up staying in the French capital.

Meanwhile, the Manchester Evening News claim Ten Hag has now joined the Argentine tactician in the running for the position, with the club working to appoint a new manager before the end of 2021/22.

The same outlet also states that Pochettino is believed to be the favoured option between the pair amongst the players, as several stars are impressed with his previous exploits in the Premier League.

Both bosses are under contract until the summer of 2023, yet the lure of joining the 20-time English champions could see them cut their time short in their existing roles.

Jones has disclosed how although the United hierarchy are aware of Pochettino’s popularity within the first-team squad, Ten Hag has caught the eye of several people, making the decision a difficult one to make.
