Forgotten After two failed transfers and World Cup doubts, the Leicester City player returns to action.

Leicester City defender Jannik Vestergaard returns to action for the under-21s against Fulham in only his second game of the season, according to LeicestershireLive.

Leicester City defender Jannik Vestergaard was named in the starting XI for the under-21s as they hosted Fulham on Monday evening.

The 30-year-old has not featured for the first team since the penalty shootout victory over Stockport County in the Carabao Cup on August 23. That was his only appearance to date this season, making the under-21s game his second competitive outing of the campaign.

He has slipped down the pecking order at City since turning down two opportunities to leave the King Power Stadium over the summer. Vestergaard pulled the plug on an £ 11 million move to Fulham after the clubs agreed on a fee for his transfer. It is perhaps ironic then that it is Fulham he is playing against for the development squad.

Vestergaard was motivated to stay and fight for his place at Leicester ahead of the 2022 World Cup next month, but such a plan appears to have backfired for him. His seat on the plane of the Denmark national team is now in serious doubt as a result of his lack of game time.

He starts for the under-21s alongside fellow central defender Lewis Brunt, who earned himself a place in City’s 25-man Premier League squad after impressing manager Brendan Rodgers since his arrival on a free transfer in the summer of 2021.
