Man City player struggles in another Champions League game after losing faith in Pep Guardiola

On Tuesday evening, Julian Alvarez struggled to make an impact as Manchester City drew 0-0 with Borussia Dortmund. Pep Guardiola gave the 22-year-old his third Champions League start in a row, but he only had one half-chance that forced Gregor Kobel to save.

Alvarez was fortunate not to be taken off in the second half because he was virtually unnoticed for the majority of the game. The Argentine international is rarely a starter in the Premier League, but he has had opportunities to shine in Europe. He has not, however, take them.

Simon Bajkowski of the Manchester Evening News gave Alvarez a player rating of 5/10 and said he did very little over the 90 minutes. Jamie Spencer of 90min gave the 22-year-old a player rating of 5/10 and noted the one decent chance he had that was saved.

Against Dortmund, Alvarez had 32 touches, failed to win an aerial duel, completed 81.8% of his 22 passes, failed to create a chance, had one shot, failed to whip in a cross, made two tackles, failed to make a successful dribble and won one freekick.

The Argentine has made 15 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring four goals without an assist.

Alvarez was highly-rated upon his move to City after scoring 54 goals with 31 assists from 122 games at River Plate, but he’s finding things a bit tougher at City.

Nevertheless, Guardiola isn’t giving up on him and will continue to hand him opportunities to prove his worth.
