TBR View: Arsenal’s £7.5m talent could emerge as one of the World Cup’s surprise stars.

Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner is likely to be the first-choice goalkeeper for the United States at the 2022 World Cup.

Over the past few years, Gunner’s backup stopper has shared the USMNT gloves with Zack Steffen.

However, coach Gregg Berhalter opted not to pick the latter in his squad.

Instead, he went for Turner, Sean Johnson of New York City FC, and Ethan Horvath of Luton Town.

This was a major surprise for the USMNT, but it gives the Arsenal keeper a major chance at making a name for himself.

Turner moved to the Emirates Stadium in the summer from New England Revolution for a reported £7.5million.

As a backup to Aaron Ramsdale, the 27-year-old hasn’t had much game time for Arsenal just yet.

When he has played, he has been fairly solid, though not too much has been asked of him in the Europa League.

However, Turner now has a chance to emerge as one of the surprise stars of the World Cup.

Admittedly, the United States is in a fairly tough group alongside England, Wales, and Iran.

The Three Lions are heavy favorites to top Group B, while the Dragons will also fancy their chances.

Although Iran may not be a favorite to go through, they must not be underestimated and could spring a surprise.

Sardar Azmoun remains a doubt due to injury, but Mehdi Tahremi has been superb for Porto and will be a danger.

Turner will need to be at his best against the likes of Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Gareth Bale, and Tahremi.

If he starts, performs, and helps the US into the knockouts, then his stock will rise massively.

What USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter said about Arsenal keeper Matt Turner

“You know, it’s more about what we have … with the three goalkeepers listed on the roster where we feel great,” Goal.com quotes Berhalter as saying.

“You feel really good about Matt Turner in these last six months.

“We know Ethan Horvath has been competing at a good level in the Championship.

“And Sean Johnson has been a mainstay in this group since day one. So we’re comfortable with that.”
