Manchester United is looking to bolster its attacking options, and Dutch international Cody Gakpo has been identified as a possible target.
According to ESPN, Manchester United is prioritizing the signing of Cody Gakpo. They will also have to pay around €50 million for the young Dutch attacker.
The 23-year-old has been in excellent form for PSV Eindhoven this season, scoring 13 goals in all competitions. Gakpo has also been in excellent form during the World Cup, scoring twice for his country.
Gakpo is a top-class talent who is expected to develop into a world-class footballer. And it is no surprise that top clubs like Manchester United are interested in securing his services. The 23-year-old winger can play anywhere across the front three, and his versatility will be a major bonus for Erik ten Hag if the Red Devils managed to secure his services.
Manchester United need to add more goals to their attack and Marcus Rashford is currently the only reliable scorer at the club. Cristiano Ronaldo has left the club through mutual consent, and it is imperative that Manchester United bring in a goalscorer in January. And Gakpo is a priority target for the Red Devils.
Players like Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho, and Antony are not reliable goalscorers. And Manchester United cannot hope to finish the season strongly with Rashford as the only goalscoring option.
The 23-year-old Dutch international could share the goalscoring burden alongside the England international during the second half of the season. The reported €50 million asking price might seem steep right now, but Gakpo has the ability and the talent to justify the transfer fee in the long run.
The attacker is yet to reach his peak and is likely to improve further with coaching and experience. Erik ten Hag could help the player develop further and fulfill his potential at Manchester United. The Red Devils certainly have the resources to pay the reported €50 million asking price, and the player is likely to be tempted to move to Old Trafford midway through the season.
