Spurs must steer clear of £60m “beast” as Sky Sports journo drops Jan “interest” claim

According to Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge, Tottenham Hotspur are still interested in Everton winger Anthony Gordon.

During the summer, the north Londoners attempted to sign the 21-year-old dynamo alongside his former teammate Richarlison, who was valued at around £60 million. The Toffees were adamant that the England U21 international would not be sold, despite Premier League rivals Chelsea reportedly offering a price comparable to what they sold Brazil forward for.

Links to Gordon, on the other hand, haven’t vanished, as a reliable journalist recently told Football FanCast.

“That doesn’t mean interest has waned,” he explained.

“He started the season pretty well for Everton, he scored a couple of decent goals but he’s not done it as much recently.”

Earlier this month, The Sun’s Jack Rosser claimed that Spurs were mulling over another move for the Finch Farm academy graduate, with early inquiries already being made.

It’s thought that manager Antonio Conte is keen to add more creativity to his frontline to lower the burden on Dejan Kulusevski, who only returned from an injury right before the break for the World Cup.

The Lilywhites could have a free run at Gordon because the aforementioned report also claims that the Blues will not reignite their interest at the turn of the year.

Everton has endured quite an inconsistent season and looks to be on the cusp of being dragged into another relegation battle, however, the young wide man has been one of the few shining lights. As per Transfermarkt, Gordon has scored three times from 14 appearances but has been asked to play in a multitude of roles, including as a makeshift center-forward in the absence of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Despite being unable to settle down in one position, the 21-year-old remains Frank Lampard’s top goalscorer but if Conte wants him as a creative outlet, then he ought to look elsewhere because as many as five other players have generated more key passes per game than him, including center-back Mason Holgate (via WhoScored).

Conte and sporting director Fabio Paratici could probably do far better than the Toffees gem, who was once dubbed an “absolute beast” by Associated Press journalist Jeff Walner, especially as he would surely struggle to usurp the likes of Son and Kulusevski and at £60m-plus, it’s not a financial risk worth taking.
