After winning the World Cup, Phil Foden and his teammates from Man City sent Julian Alvarez messages.

Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez played a key role in Argentina winning the 2022 World Cup.

Julian Alvarez received classy messages of congratulations from his Manchester City teammates after he became a world champion with Argentina on Sunday.

Alvarez and his countrymen emerged victorious from a remarkable World Cup final against France, which saw Argentina blow a two-goal lead in the space of 90 seconds, and draw 3-3 after extra time before then winning 4-3 on penalties.

Though the narrative surrounding Argentina’s third world title is all about Lionel Messi, there is no denying that Alvarez played a huge part in his side lifting the famous trophy for the first time since 1986.

The 22-year-old City attacker scored four goals in Qatar and started five consecutive games after starting Argentina’s opening two encounters on the bench.

Though 16 City players departed for Qatar a month ago, Alvarez was the last man standing come the final. The likes of England, Portugal, and Spain all had decent City representation but all fell short.

The win means that Alvarez is the only active City player to own a World Cup winner’s medal, something that could make his City colleagues rather jealous. But when Alvarez took to Instagram after the match, it quickly became clear that City’s other World Cup stars are delighted for their teammate.

Alvarez posted two photos: the first of him lifting the trophy on the field in Qatar and the second showing a young Alvarez holding a replica in a sports shop. He captioned the photos: “Just football. It’s the dreams that are achieved. World champions 2022. Proud to be Argentinian.”
