‘Agreed’: £23 million ace nears Tottenham exit as director confirms transfer discussions

Lucas Moura has already ‘agreed’ to return to Brazil when his contract at Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur expires with Sao Paulo his preferred destination, Tricolor director Carlos Belmonte tells Arnaldo e Tironi on YouTube, via ESPN.

Belmonte’s comments will come as no surprise to anyone who has been keeping a close eye on the Lucas situation over the last 12 months or so.

The former PSG winger will be a free agent in July as things stand, though Tottenham does have the option of triggering a 12-month extension clause in his contract. And Lucas has never made any secret of his desire to pull on Sao Paulo’s Tricolor jersey again, having started his professional career at the Morumbi over a decade ago.

“I’ve always said that I want to go back to Sao Paulo,” Lucas explains (Flow Sports). “It’s the club I love.

“But I never set a deadline. I said that I wanted to spend at least 10 years in Europe; playing at a high level, come rain or shine. Now let’s see what happens, what (offers) appear.”

Sao Paulo held initial discussions with Lucas last summer, before accepting that any deal was well beyond their financial means. The Brazilian will have to accept a sizeable pay cut if he is to return to his old stomping ground in 2023; Lucas currently takes home around £ 90,000 a week in North London (Spotrac).

LUCAS MOURA HOPES TO JOIN SAO PAULO AFTER LEAVING TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

“We talked several times. That’s already agreed (that Lucas will return to Brazil),” Belmonte begins.

“We trust Lucas’ word. The first team he’s going to look for is in Sao Paulo. And then we’re going to make the decision; is it possible? Affordable? Is it worth it?

“We don’t know when it will happen. Lucas has a huge affection for Sao Paulo, and so do we (for him). But it will depend on the moment. He is always on our radar, but there is no guarantee that he will come to Sao Paulo.”

According to Lance, there are Premier League and Serie A clubs reportedly interested in Lucas, while La Liga outfit Sevilla is another name in the frame. Lucas could potentially postpone his Sao Paulo homecoming if he is offered the chance to extend his European career.
