Liverpool is keeping an eye on the 41-year-old manager, whom Gerrard described as a “proper champion” – according to reports. It’s probably too early in the day to be discussing Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp replacement.

The German has established himself as one of the Reds’ best coaches in history, having won the Champions League and ended the club’s 30-year Premier League drought.

And, with a contract at Liverpool until 2026, it’s clear that Klopp isn’t planning on leaving anytime soon.

Having said that, there are major concerns at Anfield right now.

Klopp’s team was recently eliminated from the FA Cup, which they won last season.

In the Premier League, they are ninth, 10 points behind fourth-placed Manchester United.

It’s becoming increasingly difficult for Klopp to motivate these same Liverpool players, and Goal.com reports that the club’s hierarchy is ‘keeping an eye’ on a familiar figure.

Xabi Alonso has led Bayer Leverkusen from the relegation zone to ninth place in the Bundesliga since taking over in early November.

Liverpool is keeping an eye on him, according to Goal’s Neil Jones.

Even Steven Gerrard admires his former Merseyside teammate, describing him as a “proper champion” back in 2018 [Echo].

Gerrard has been linked with the role, but his failure at Aston Villa means he’ll need another Premier League triumph before he’s even considered.

As previously stated, Klopp is unlikely to leave his current position, but it’s worth considering the possibilities, and Liverpool is right to be intrigued by Alonso.
