‘We all know,’ Carlo Ancelotti says as he prepares to face Liverpool.

Real Madrid takes on Liverpool in the Champions League later this month

Carlo Ancelotti has declared that the Premier League’s record-breaking January transfer window will not end European football’s competitiveness ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

The former Everton manager was speaking after the Premier League’s January transfer window ended with a record £815 million spent.

Liverpool will face Ancelotti’s Real Madrid in the Champions League last-16, with the first match scheduled for February 21st at Anfield. Liverpool’s only signing during the transfer window was forward Cody Gakpo, who joined from PSV Eindhoven for around £40 million.

Liverpool has the eleventh-highest net spend of any Premier League club this season.

“We all know what happens in the Premier League, their television rights are much higher than in other leagues,” Ancelotti said. This, I believe, will continue.

“I don’t think this is going to end the competitiveness that exists in Europe. English teams did not win the Champions League or the Europa League last year. The domestic competition will undoubtedly be more competitive and enjoyable.”

In this year’s January transfer window, Real Madrid made no signings and saw no departures.

Ancelotti went on to say: “We didn’t go to the market because we didn’t have to. It is not necessary to enter the winter market if you plan well and execute your strategy. If you must, it is because something has occurred. We believed it was unnecessary to intervene in the winter market because the squad was in good shape.”

Vinicius Junior scored the only goal in Liverpool’s 1-0 loss to Ancelotti’s Real Madrid in the Champions League final last year. Premier League clubs spent a record-breaking £2.8 billion during the 2022/23 season.
