After Manchester United defeated Palace, Erik ten Hag sent a message to an irritated Alejandro Garnacho.

Erik ten Hag believes Alejandro Garnacho’must accept’ being substituted late in Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

United got off to a fast start with a penalty from Bruno Fernandes in the seventh minute, and Marcus Rashford doubled the hosts’ lead at Old Trafford in the second half.

With 20 minutes remaining, Ten Hag’s team was reduced to ten men after VAR spotted Casemiro grabbing Will Hughes by the throat during a scuffle involving both sets of players.

Palace’s Jeffrey Schlupp pulled one back, but United held on for the win, moving them up to third in the Premier League table.

Meanwhile, Garnacho came on as a substitute before replacing Wout Weghorst in the 59th minute. The Argentine, however, cut a frustrated figure on United’s bench after being substituted for Harry Maguire in the 87th minute as Ten Hag’s side attempted to seal the game.

Ten Hag, on the other hand, believes Garnacho must accept the decision was made in the best interests of the team.

‘First, we had to see how they changed, then you have to anticipate and see how we can close, how to be compact, how we close the gaps, how we get away from our goal while still having a threat in attack,’ Ten Hag explained after United’s win to MUTV.

‘I believe we needed to make a change. It’s not always easy to take a player off who we brought on, but it’s in the best interests of the team, and the player must accept that.’

Ten Hag also believes Casemiro was unfairly singled out for his red card and has criticized VAR’s lack of consistency.

‘Of course, you have to control your emotions, but that’s extremely difficult in such situations,’ Ten Hag said.

‘I saw two teams fighting, two teams where several players crossed the line, and one player was picked out and sent off. That does not sit well with me.

‘The Crystal Palace player [Schlupp] takes a big risk with this foul; he [Anthony] could have been badly injured by pushing him across the line.

‘Then everyone reacted, including Crystal Palace and Manchester United players, not just Casemiro.

‘One of the players performed even worse than Casemiro. You freeze the moment with Casemiro, he crossed the line, but Ayew definitely [should have been sent off].

‘You must maintain consistency with VAR. We lost Christian Eriksen last week due to a bad foul, with no interference from VAR. At Crystal Palace, [Jean-Philippe] Mateta elbowed [Lisandro] Martinez; for two weeks, [Martinez] has been running with two stitches in his brow, and there has been no interference [from VAR], this is not right.’
