Newcastle will release five players at the end of the 2022/23 season, according to reports.

Newcastle are expected to release Loris Karius, Mark Gillespie, Ciaran Clark, Paul Dummett, and Matty Longstaff when their contracts expire this summer, according to the Northern Echo.

Both Karius and Gillespie were signed as backup keepers – Karius’ contract was recently extended following the departure of Karl Darlow to Hull – but neither appears to be part of the squad for next season.

Clark has spent this season on loan at Sheffield United in the Championship, making just seven appearances as the Blades push for automatic promotion.

The Irish international, 33, is approaching the end of his career and will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of his loan spell at Bramall Lane.

Dummett, like Clark, is an aging defender who has struggled with injuries and playing time. He has spent the last 23 years of his life with the Magpies, but it appears that he will be released in a few months.

Matty Longstaff has failed to develop following a couple of disappointing loan spells, with his most recent spell at Colchester cut short due to a serious knee injury.
