Mason Greenwood of Manchester United has been given permission to rejoin Erik ten Hag’s squad.

Mason Greenwood is awaiting word on his ability to rejoin the Manchester United squad.

Mason Greenwood, a Manchester United forward, could face a problem if he rejoins Erik ten Hag’s squad following the club’s internal investigation. Greenwood was charged with one count of attempted rape, one count of controlling and coercive behavior, and one count of assault causing actual bodily harm in October 2022. Prosecutors dropped all charges earlier this month, and United is conducting an internal investigation to determine the 21-year-future old’s at Old Trafford.

After the Crown Prosecution Service announced that all charges against Greenwood had been dropped, United issued a statement outlining their next steps. “Manchester United notes the Crown Prosecution Service’s decision to drop all charges against Mason Greenwood,” the statement said. “The club will now conduct its own process before determining the next steps. We will not comment further until that process is completed.”

It is unclear whether Greenwood will be reintroduced to the squad, but if he is, he may struggle to get regular game time under Ten Hag. Before his suspension in January 2022, the one-cap England international usually operated on the right flank, but the club has recently splashed the cash in that area.

Ten Hag signed Antony from Ajax this summer for £85 million, and while the Brazilian has had a mixed start to life at Old Trafford, he has Ten Hag’s trust and is unlikely to be replaced by Greenwood anytime soon.

The 21-year-old Englishman has also been away from first-team training for over a year, and if he is reintroduced, he will require extensive conditioning to compete in the Premier League.

Jadon Sancho returned to the club after a period away and needed to catch up before making two substitute appearances and scoring in Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Leeds. Greenwood’s minutes would be jeopardized by the former Borussia Dortmund star, who previously thrived on the right.

Greenwood has also previously played as a central striker, a position the club considered strengthening after Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract was terminated prior to the World Cup and Wout Weghorst was signed on loan from Burnley as a short-term option.

The Netherlands international, along with Anthony Martial, could both leave Old Trafford in the summer, but the news of Greenwood’s charges being dropped has had no impact on United’s plans to sign a striker at the end of the season.

The club’s priority for the summer transfer window is to sign a new striker for Ten Hag, and Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen are thought to be the club’s top targets.
