Gary Lineker echoes Alan Shearer on BBC crisis as Leicester City icon makes Match of the Day return

Leicester City news as Gary Lineker returns to the BBC on Saturday after missing last week’s Match of the Day

Gary Lineker has returned to the BBC and Match of the Day as the Leicester City legend presents coverage of Manchester City vs Burnley in the FA Cup.

The former Foxes forward created the stir after comparing the government’s language over a new immigration bill to 1930s Germany. Lineker was subsequently taken off the air, sparking widespread disruption to sports coverage – especially when a number of his colleagues went on strike in solidarity.

Lineker’s return to the BBC was confirmed on Monday (March 13) after days of growing pressure on the corporation. Bosses said they were looking forward to his on-screen appearance for this Saturday’s Match of the Day, while Lineke also said he was glad the situation had been resolved.

And Lineker did not mention any of the furor during the opening moments of the show. Instead, Alan Shearer apologized for the disruption it had caused.

Lineker said to BBC pundit Alan Shearer: “Alan it’s good to be here”, to which Shearer responded by saying: “It is, I just need to clear up and wanted to say how upset we were that all the audiences missed out on last weekend’s coverage. it was a really difficult situation for everyone concerned and through no fault of their own some really great people on TV and on Radio were put in an impossible situation and that wasn’t fair.

“It’s good to get back to some sort of normality and talking about football.” Lineker, then simply said: “I absolutely echo those sentiments.”
