Tottenham has a huge few months ahead as chairman Daniel Levy faces some decisions that will likely decide the direction of the club’s project for years to come. The next head coach and director of football are yet to be decided, though it will have to be a carefully thought-out appointment on both accounts.
The previous three head coaches Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo, and Antonio Conte haven’t led to any tangible glory, while Fabio Paratici’s signings as director of football have been hit-and-miss. There’s the added pressure of Harry Kane’s future rumbling in the background too.
The striker has just 12 months remaining on his contract and his importance to the side is clear, meaning there will have to be an enticing project to get him to commit to. “That’s down to the club,” the striker said on recent speculation over his future in Lilywhite.
“If I end up speaking to the chairman towards the end of the season I’m sure he’ll fill me in on what he’s thinking, but ultimately we have three more games. We don’t want to look too far ahead or get carried away. The club will make the best decision for everyone, the players, the fans, the club in general and we just have to wait to see what that is.”
The transfer window may also need to prove that ambition to Kane too, with a number of signings able to transform the side. One key missing piece of the side is a playmaker, with the side missing out on a return for Christian Eriksen last summer to Manchester United, with a replacement for him never truly found.
Instead, Kane has often operated as a playmaker as much as a striker in his game, but they could be handed a chance to land one this summer. That is Leicester City’s James Maddison, who is an England teammate of Kane’s and has impressed this season, despite the Foxes’ issues.
The Telegraph has reported that an exit for the midfielder looks likely in the window, for a fee between £45 million and £60 million. With the side staring down at relegation, it could be a move from Levy that would improve the side and show ambition, something that could be key to keeping Kane.
