Laver Cup skipper John McEnroe will be replaced by tennis great Andre Agassi.

At the Laver Cup, Andre Agassi, the eight-time Grand Slam winner, will lead Team World in lieu of John McEnroe.

The Laver Cup will be held in San Francisco in 2025, marking the start of Agassi’s term, which was revealed on Wednesday. In a three-day competition, six of the top male players in Europe take on six guys from the rest of the world.

Since the inaugural Laver Cup in Prague in 2017, McEnroe has led the team as captain. In September, he will lead Team World in Berlin against Team Europe under captain Bjorn Borg. Borg, who was McEnroe’s rival during their playing careers, is also making his farewell appearance as captain. Soon, a replacement for him will be named. In addition to 60 ATP Tour victories and a 1996 Olympic gold medal, Agassi was once ranked as the world’s top player.

The 54-year-old Agassi said, “It is truly an honor to accept the invitation to become the Laver Cup Team World Captain. The competitive level of Laver Cup is off the charts and it’s easy to see why. You’re there with the team, your peers, guys you respect, and everybody has a responsibility. For me, the key will be truly getting to know the players and understanding their needs throughout the year in order to choose the matchups that will give us the best chance to win and win the Laver Cup.

“I’m excited to take on this role and I hope to establish the same rapport, respect, and trust with the players that John has.” I’m not taking this lightly. McEnroe, 65, stated that he approved of the selection made for his replacement. McEnroe remarked, “The Laver Cup is very special to me; it’s an absolutely incredible competition that I love being a part of.” “I’ll be cheering him on and supporting Team World in any way I can.” Copyright 2024 Field Level Media – All Rights Reserved
