After splashing out £100m on Jack Grealish City are likely to make at least one more big signing before the transfer window slams shut in just under three weeks

Manchester City will begin the defence of their Premier League title on Sunday as they travel to Tottenham for their opening game of the new season.

Pep Guardiola’s side look in a strong position to finish top of the pile again, especially given the £100m they splashed out on England attacking midfielder Jack Grealish.

Nevertheless, Guardiola will be desperate for at least one or two further additions before the transfer window shuts on August 31.

Whether or not Harry Kane will be one of them remains to be seen, and at this point it is anyone’s guess whether or not a deal will be done for the Tottenham man.

Kane is not the only player dominating the headlines, however, and here is a look at all the other rumours coming out of the Etihad…

Former City defender Danny Mills has urged his old club to forget about Kane and instead target Erling Haaland next summer.

City are still believed to be holding out hope they can get a deal done for Kane, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy does not look likely to budge on his £150m valuation of the England captain.

Haaland, who has become one of the most feared forwards in the world with Dortmund, could be available at the end of the season, and has been strongly linked with a Premier League move.

And speaking to The Racing Post Mills suggested the 21-year-old Norwegian would be a better signing.

“I’m not sure Harry Kane suits Manchester City with the way that they play,” Mills said.

“He’s going to score goals, but the way that Guardiola wants to play with the high press and the energy, that’s not Kane’s game. Kane can play the false nine very well, but if you want a player that can go out and do everything then it’s Haaland.

“He’s absolutely outstanding and he’s a lot younger, so you’ll get your buy back.

“Will City go out and spend that amount of money for Kane? I’m not so sure when Haaland is a cheaper and better option in a year’s time.”

Moreno set for another loan

Nineteen-year-old forward Pablo Moreno looks set for another loan move this summer, with Primeira Liga side Famalicao among those linked with the youngster.

Moreno was first signed by City from Juventus in 2020, but he has yet to make a senior appearance for the team and spent the last campaign on loan at Girona, where he managed just two goals in 26 appearances.

He has clearly not done enough to break into the City side yet, and according to Portuguese outlet Record he is likely to be shipped out again.

A return to Girona is not out of the question, but Famalicao remain favourites for his signature, and Guardiola will be hoping the highly-rated player can have a more successful spell this time.

The future of Gabriel Jesus has looked uncertain at some points this summer.

The Brazilian forward has not always found it easy to find regular minutes, and there were some suggestions he could be involved in a player plus cash deal for Kane.

But judging by Guardiola’s comments ahead of the new campaign, the 24-year-old still has a huge part to play in his thinking.

“Gabriel is an incredibly important player for us,” he said. “He can play as a striker or wider.

“He is exceptional and he has a key role for us for many years and been a big part of the huge success we’ve had every season”
