The Mayfield native answered some quick-fire questions from Gary Neville and revealed a host of answers about his playing career

Roy Keane has enjoyed an incredible career which we all in Cork are very proud of and he was asked various questions about his career in a quick-fire question and answer session this week.

The former Manchester United skipper — who has recently turned 50 — made an appearance on ex-teammate Gary Neville’s YouTube channel ‘The Overlap’ to answer 50 questions about his life and career and he made some revealing comments about his time at Old Trafford.

After spending 12 years at the club between 1993 and 2005, Keane went down in history as one of the best captains in the club’s illustrious history with seven Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy and four FA Cups.

In the same sitting of questions where he called the legendary Peter Schmeichel ‘overrated’ but named him as the best goalkeeper he played alongside, he also named his best teammate too.

“Because I played with him in the middle of the park, Butty [Nicky Butt] or Scholesy [Paul Scholes]. I’d say Scholesy maybe, because he’s got a goal in him.”

His answer for his favourite teammate ever was slightly different though — although it was another United colleague.”I’d have to maybe go with Denis Irwin, because I roomed with Denis with Ireland and United and he’s a Cork man. He lives five minutes away and never gets in touch with me.”

When asked about his toughest opponent, Keane revealed that French legend Zinedine Zidane was the man that stood out and that his worst performance ever came against one of ‘Zizou’s’ former sides, Real Madrid.

“We played Real Madrid one time at home and I just tried yoga a couple of days before that,” said Keane.

“I couldn’t get going and my energy was gone, Real Madrid at home and I never got a kick. I got taken off and I remember thinking, ‘I’m finished at the real top level football.'”

His rivalry with Patrick Vieira and Arsenal during the late 90s and early 00s is stuff of legend and, while revealing that he always believed he was better than the former Gunners skipper, he also revealed that Highbury was his favourite away ground and the location of his favourite goal.

“I scored a couple down at Arsenal when we beat them 2-1. I enjoyed that. That was a big game for us. The one I enjoyed most? I used to love Highbury.”
