Manchester United will boast the ‘best defence in the Premier League

Manchester United will boast the ‘best defence in the Premier League’ if Raphael Varane starts against Southampton today.

World Cup winner Varane joined from Real Madrid for an initial £34million, with the deal potentially rising to £42million, this summer and could make his debut at the St Mary’s. He was presented to the Old Trafford crowd last weekend before officially becoming a United player.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first choice defence now includes more than £200million worth of talent as the France star is set to play alongside Luke Shaw (£30million), Harry Maguire (£80million) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£50million).

While the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Man City have also splashed out tens of millions on building strong defences, former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor believes United beat them all.

He told talkSPORT: “If he starts, I think they have the best defence in the league. Luke Shaw, Varane, Maguire and Wan-Bissaka are the best defence in the league.

“That’s what they’ve been crying out for in games.

“Lindelof has bene okay, but has a mistake in him. Varane doesn’t have a mistake in him. He’s no nonsense.

“Maguire is the one who will play out with it, run out with the ball and who better than Varane, one of the quickest centre-halves in the league now, just back there saying ‘go on Maguire you go out there, if you lose it, I’m back here with Wan-Bissaka to tidy up for you’.

“I’m excited to see him, I hope he plays.”
