Donny van de Beek’s Manchester United career will be close to breaking point if Saul Niguez is signed before the month is concluded.

Niguez has been the subject of intrigue from the Old Trafford hierarchy all summer and beyond.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seemingly wants, and certainly needs, to add extra depth to his midfield.

In the current market, players of quality in that particular position for a reasonable price are at a premium.

Luckily for United, they could possibly land Saul on a season-long loan.

And it appears they have already stepped up their approach for the Atletico Madrid man.

AS reported earlier today that the Red Devils are leading the pack to sign the 26-year-old, ahead of Premier League rival Chelsea. Roman Abramovich is not one to bow down from a fight or miss out on a bargain, so this deal could go down to the wire.

If Solskjaer does manage to steal the Spaniard from Chelsea’s grasp, his squad strength would certainly step up a level.

Even if it means throwing Donny van de Beek down a few flights of metaphorical footballing stairs in the process.

The Dutchman’s place within United’s set-up has been on thin ice, virtually ever since his £35m (BBC) move from Ajax last September.

He started just four league games during his maiden spell in England, a startling poor return for an individual of clear quality.

It appears the same cycle of underuse is already in action, as van de Beek remained on the bench for both of United’s opening two fixtures this campaign.

This sequence certainly won’t change any time soon if Niguez does arrive in Manchester ahead of the transfer window’s closure.

Whilst Fred and Scott McTominay might be looking over their shoulders anxiously, van de Beek will be staring straight into the abyss.
