Cristiano Ronaldo had a debut to remember when he returned to action for Man Utd against Newcastle United on Saturday

Cristiano Ronaldo admits he had two surprises when he made his second debut for Manchester United against Newcastle over the weekend.

The Portuguese forward marked his return to United with a well taken brace as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side romped to a 4-1 victory at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo’s own individual display ensured it was memorable day in the recent history of United as a jubilant home crowd cheered on their rejuvenated side.

After the match Ronaldo insisted that he was expecting to score a goal on his return to action but admits he was not expecting to find the back of the net twice.

“I didn’t expect to score two goals,” he told BBC Sport. “I expect one but not two. I have to appreciate the fans and what they did to me today. I feel so proud for that. “The most important thing was to win and to win games. Manchester [United] needs to be where they deserve. It is to win, to build the team and build the club and the mentality.

“This is what we are looking for. Of course I am happy to score goals I am not going to deny that but the most important thing is the team and the team played good.”

When asked about the reception he received Ronaldo also admitted he was surprised to hear supporters chant his name throughout the entirety of the match.

He added: “It is unbelievable. When I started the game I was so nervous, I swear. It is normally because I did not expect that they would sing my name all game. I was very nervous but maybe I didn’t show but I was. The reception is incredible but I am here to win games and help the team.”
