The 4-1 result probably flattered United in the end, though the three points are all that matters as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s army goes marching on.

What’s scary is that there are still so many areas in which this team can improve. After all, we’re still integrating the new signings in while some key faces are missing with injury.

Fred didn’t play yesterday due to his status being up in the air and there were many question marks about his replacement, Nemanja Matic, who struggled last time out.

Well, the Serb answered his doubters in emphatic fashion, playing a brilliant game from first minute to last. The 33-year-old would roll back the years, putting in a Rolls Royce performance from midfield.

He’d break up the play excellently, burst forward where possible and always pick the right pass. It was exactly what was needed against a Newcastle side who’d threaten on the counter-attack after soaking up Reds pressure.

I guess this is what we’re going to get from Matic these days – a real mixed bag of outings from a player whose peak years are behind him. He did prove that he can still do it from time-to-time though, and Matic will be a useful asset to have in the squad this season.
