Maguire sends message to Lingard after costly Manchester United error vs Young Boys

Man Utd midfielder Jesse Lingard made a costly error in the Champions League defeat to Young Boys on Tuesday night.

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire insists nobody is blaming Jesse Lingard after his late error led to Young Boys’ winner on Tuesday night.

United tasted defeat in the opening match of their Champions League campaign when Jordan Siebatcheu pounced on a stray backpass from substitute Lingard to secure a famous win in the fifth minute of added time.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side had led the match through Cristiano Ronaldo’s finely taken goal but the match turned on its head when defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka was shown a straight red 10 minutes before half-time.

Young Boys made their man advantage count after the break and levelled the score when Moumi Ngamaleu poked in from close range before Siebatcheu secured the win in dramatic circumstances.

After the match Maguire eased the pressure Lingard and insists the England international will be ready to put things right against former side West Ham this weekend.

“It’s disappointing, but that’s football, people make mistakes,” he told MUTV. “We’re not blaming Jesse, he’s tried to do the right thing but he’s left the pass short. Everyone makes mistakes, I’m sure every footballer who has played on that pitch today has made a mistake for a goal. Jesse will pick himself up and be ready to go again on Sunday.

“We don’t like losing any match, we’re disappointed with tonight, but we’ve five games to go and we’ll be looking to win the next match and pick up momentum from there.”
