Lingard overcame a tricky week, in which his mistake led to United’s loss in the Champions League, to score a brilliant winner and secure all three points for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team in the league on Sunday.

Before he came on as a substitute, and when he made his entrance into the game, West Ham fans had given the 28-year-old a warm reception, after his brilliant loan stint for them last season.

So the forward decided to respectfully not really celebrate when he scored, something that has really annoyed some people, including Michael Owen.

“The finish is absolutely sublime,” Owen told Premier League Productions.

“The only thing that is poor about the whole scenario is that he doesn’t celebrate.

“I can’t believe players don’t celebrate when they score a goal against their old club, he was only there two minutes.

“If he didn’t want to score, if he’s not that happy don’t pull the trigger, pass the ball, if that’s the case.

“It’s the only thing that lets him down there, because everything else is absolutely spectacular.”

Whilst the England forward did try to hold back on his celebrations, his teammates tried to encourage him to go crazy in front of the away fans.

Both Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored United’s first, and Bruno Fernandes pushed the former Hammers’ loanee towards to crown in an attempt to get him to celebrate.

Lingard later explained why he decided against celebrating. “They supported me in the loan spell and gave me a great reception, so it was only right to pay them back,” he told MUTV.

“It was a great reception from the West Ham fans. I had a brilliant time here, but I had to do my bit.”

Lingard’s heroics still needed an assist in order to secure the three points for his side, with David de Gea saving an injury time penalty from Mark Noble.

The Spain keeper certainly didn’t hold back with his celebrations, and nor did the rest of United’s players at the full time whistle.

Lingard had been having a tough week, after his mistake on Tuesday caused United to lose their opening game in the Champions League campaign against Young Boys.

On Sunday he was given respect by West Ham fans as he warmed up in front of the home crowd at the London Stadium, having started the game as a substitute.

Fans of the London side even clapped him on when he was brought on in the second half, after his brilliant performances for the Hammers last season helped them qualify for the Europa League.

However they probably weren’t as happy to see him when he scored a late winner for his team. At least Lingard didn’t want to celebrate, despite his teammates literally pushing him into it.

The 28-year-old scored nine goals in 16 league appearance for David Moyes team last season and really got his spark back after a tough couple of years at Old Trafford.
They tried to sign him in the summer but the England forward was told he was still wanted by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as part of his plans for the campaign.

Lingard then told the Hammers he didn’t want to return, as United in turn rejected a reported six bids from Premier League clubs for the player.

He’s had a mixed start to the season, barely playing for the first few games, before earning an England recall, scoring against Newcastle United, making the match changing mistake against Young Boys and now this.

It wasn’t just Lingard who was the hero on Sunday though, with David de Gea also finding some retribution to hold onto the three points.

Despite the winning goal coming late, it still looked like Solskjaer’s team would throw away two points, when their hosts were awarded an injury time penalty, following Luke Shaw’s hand ball.

Moyes brought on club captain Mark Noble to take it but De Gea saved the spot kick and took United level on points with Liverpool and Chelsea at the top of the table.

It was the Span keepers first penalty save since 2016 for the club and made up for the penalty shoot-out disaster in the Europa League final back in May.
