Liverpool are top of the Premier League and top of their Champions League group

Liverpool are top of the Premier League and top of their Champions League group two months into the 2021-22 season, and Tuesday’s 5-1 demolition of FC Porto served as a further reminder of just how good this side can be.

There’s no time to sit back and celebrate, though, with a match on the weekend against Manchester City. The game likely won’t decide who wins the title, but it does feel as though it could well determine which side moves ahead as favourite.

“We don’t have easy games and we have to always be ready to play and play in our way and keep the intensity and keep the quality,” said midfielder Fabinho, reflecting on victory over Porto as well as the challenge to come against City.

“We played a hard game against Brentford last weekend and we played a hard game tonight, but we just have to keep playing in our way and hopefully we will keep on winning games. A performance like this gives us confidence for the future.

“The next game is against Manchester City, so we know Anfield will be with a really nice atmosphere. These are the kind of games every player likes to play. We just have to play our football, to give everything, and the fans will be with us.”

After the first six rounds of league play, Liverpool are the Premier League’s only undefeated side with four wins and a pair of draws, putting them a point ahead of City who have a loss and draw to go with their own four wins so far this season.

A single point is all that separates the two sides—and not just this season, but going back three whole seasons to the start of 2018-19. In that time, Liverpool have earned a Premier League leading 279 points while City have earned 278.

For three years, everyone else has been playing catch-up with Jürgen Klopp’s Reds and Pep Guardiola’s Citizens. On Sunday, the two meet once again to see if they can determine which should be considered favourites this season.
