City daily round-up: Ex-United player Gary Neville believes Chelsea can win title as Pep Guardiola wants reunion with Robert Lewandowski
Welcome to the latest edition of the City Is Ours daily round-up, where we take a look at some of the most interesting Manchester City stories of the day.
Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville believes, despite Manchester City and Liverpool’s sustained brilliance over the last few years, that Chelsea can with the Premier League this season.
Pep Guardiola is still focusing on bringing in a striker with one of his former men, and arguably the best forward in the world, Robert Lewandowski reportedly being high on the list of the manager’s wishlist.
The Manchester City boss also, despite interest from across Europe, wants to see Raheem Sterling stay at the Etihad Stadium and fight for his place.
Neville fancies Chelsea charge
It’s fair to say over the last few years City and Liverpool have comfortably been the best sides in the country and will almost certainly be there or there about come the end of the Premier League season. However, after their hard-fought victory over Brentford in the late kick-off on Saturday, former United right-back Gary Neville believes Chelsea can go all the way this season.
Speaking to Sky Sports, the pundit stated- “I think Chelsea can win the title. I know people say City and Liverpool and you can’t disagree with that with what they’ve done over the last three or four years.
“City’s performance at Chelsea a few weeks ago was incredible, but I do think this Chelsea team are resilient and they’re tough to play against. I can’t think any team in the league would like to play against them.” Added Neville.
Reflecting on Chelsea’s 1-0 away win to newly-promoted side Brentford, Neville believed the performance shown Thomas Tuchel’s men could take the Premier League away from Manchester- “I know Brentford enjoyed the last ten minutes but that was a tough game for them for 60/70 minutes, they couldn’t get into the game.
“I know they had some joy towards the end but that was a Chelsea team that had players missing and they have so many players to come back, the players on the bench, the players coming off the bench- I think they have a great chance of winning the league, I really do.”
Despite both Chelsea and Liverpool looking strong, City will be quietly confident they can secure their fourth Premier League title under Guardiola.
Guardiola wants Lewandowski
We all know City were unsuccessful in their pursuit of a striker in the summer transfer window and despite Guardiola’s side not appearing for a lack of goals, the Spaniard will reportedly be going in for a striker once again this summer.
Brinkwire have reported that the Manchester City boss could soon reunite with former striker Robert Lewandowski after the player’s agent revealed City could be his next club.
If Raheem Sterling decides to move on from the club, there could be an even bigger vacancy in the forward line at the Etihad, the type of vacancy only the likes of Robert Lewandowski could be capable of filling.
Manchester City are yet to replace club legend Sergio Aguero and although he wouldn’t be a long-term solution, Lewandowski is still firmly one of the very best strikers in world football.
Guardiola wants Sterling stay
After admitting he’d be open to a move away from Manchester City in hope of more game time, the manager has expressed his desire for Sterling to remain with the club.
According to 90min, sources close to the club have said the next few months will be pivotal in deciding Sterling’s future and it’s understand that Guardiola has told the hierarchy at the club he doesn’t want Sterling to leave and he wouldn’t hold it against the Englishman for exprreessing his desire to leave.
There’s no denying Sterling’s immense talent and although he’s open to a move away from the club it doesn’t seem like that could be the deciding factor on his future as Guardiola is often the type to get his own way.
