Manchester City fan in hospital after being attacked after Club Bruges victory

A Manchester City supporter who was attacked after the club’s victory over Club Bruges in the Champions League is in a serious condition in hospital in Belgium.

The man is believed to have been attacked in a car park in nearby Drongen after watching City’s 5-1 victory.

Belgian newspaper HLN reported on Wednesday morning that the man was transferred in a coma to the AZ Maria Middelares and Belgium’s public prosecution service said he remains in “mortal danger”. Five people were arrested overnight.

City said in a statement on Wednesday: “Everyone at Manchester City is shocked and saddened to hear reports of an attack on one of our supporters after the Champions League game in Bruges last night.

“We are currently working with our counterparts at Club Bruges as well as Belgian and Greater Manchester Police to establish more information.

“Our thoughts and best wishes go out to the family and friends of the Belgian based supporter, who remains in hospital.”

Club Bruges said in their own statement: “Club Bruges was horrified to learn of the events at the E40 motorway parking lot in Drongen where a Manchester City supporter, who had previously been a guest at the Jan Breydel Stadium, was attacked.

“Club Bruges strongly disapproves of all criminal behavior, both inside and outside the stadium and puts tolerance first.

“Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the Manchester City supporter.”

Belgium’s public prosecution service has said that five people were arrested overnight. They said in a statement: “The victim came into confrontation with some suspects in the parking lot and ended up on the ground after physical aggression. The emergency services arrived on the scene.”

It added the man was in “mortal danger”.
