In a recent tweet, SportBILD journalist Christian Falk stated that Manchester City are keen on signing RB Leipzig midfielder Dani Olmo in the upcoming transfer window as Pep Guardiola looks set to add to his options in the attacking department.
La Liga giants Barcelona are also interested in re-signing their former youth player; however, the staggering $1.57 billion debt might forbid them from landing the highly-rated Spaniard.
“Of course, Barcelona also have hopes of Olmo, but they don’t have the money at the back and at the front, and it is questionable whether they can afford him,” Falk told BILD.
“Manchester United have had scouts watching Olmo at practically every recent home game.
“Of course, we have to be careful, because local rivals Manchester City also have him on their books.
“You can imagine that Pep Guardiola will also like him because he would fit perfectly into the team’s system.
“United and City are my favourites at the moment if Olmo were to be released by RB.”
Olmo’s current contract at the Red Bull Arena runs until the summer of 2024, but given the amount of attention he has been receiving over the past few months, an early move seems inevitable.
Olmo’s Blistering Form At RB Leipzig
After bagging 34 goals and 28 assists in 124 appearances for Dinamo Zagreb, Dani Olmo signed for German side RB Leipzig in January 2020. It would be an understatement to say that he has been one of the stars of his team since then – scoring 12 goals and registering 14 assists in 64 appearances across all competitions.
Despite the fact that he has been struggling with a torn fibre muscle this season, his rare outings have impressed some of the biggest European clubs. Besides, he has managed to put up some awe-inspiring numbers on the board this term – averaging 2.8 shots, 1.4 key passes, 0.8 dribbles, and 0.9 long balls per 90 minutes across all competitions.
The Right Fit For Pep?
Manchester City are stacked with options in pretty much every department at the moment except for the strikers’, so Dani Olmo might not be an immediate starter at the Etihad under such circumstances. However, Raheem Sterling’s departure in the future might open up an opportunity for the Spaniard to secure regular gametime – and he’d be the perfect replacement for the England international in that case.
Hence, Pep Guardiola should try and get this deal over the line at all costs.
