‘Wow’, ‘No way’, ‘This can’t be real’ – Many Man City fans flock to ‘depressing’ manager update

Flocking to Twitter, many Manchester City supporters have erupted over some managerial news out of Eastlands involving Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers.

Since Pep Guardiola took over in the summer of 2016, the Sky Blues have gone on to enjoy an unprecedented amount of success – winning three Premier League titles, four Carabao Cups, two Community Shields and an FA Cup (Transfermarkt).

City are also the only team since Sir Alex Ferguson’s Man United to retain a Premier League title after winning it the season prior, with Guardiola also guiding them to their first ever Champions League final last year.

The Spaniard has done a remarkable job since succeeding Manuel Pellegrini but, with his contract set to expire in 2023, there have been murmurs over who could replace him.

According to Sunday Times reporter Jonathan Northcroft, speaking on The Transfer Window Podcast, City an sporting director Txiki Begiristain have one eye on Foxes boss Rodgers if Guardiola opts to leave Manchester.

“Manchester City have been working on Brendan Rodgers for years. He’s been on their list for years,” he explained (as transcribed by Sports Illustrated).

“He (Rodgers) knows that they like him, they let him know that they like him on the basis that if we ever come to change Pep Guardiola, or when Pep leaves, we’d be interested in you.”

Flocking to this managerial update, many City fans aren’t too pleased with the prospect of Rodgers as Guardiola’s heir – potentially taking into account the Northern Irishman’s far inferior points per game record (1.83) when compared to their manager (2.36).

His lack of pedigree when it comes to major silverware next to Guardiola may also be a factor.

While appointing any new boss will always arguably be a step down from Guardiola, it’s safe to these Sky Blues don’t want the 48-year-old in particular.
