Barcelona are looking for a new technical secretary after incumbent Ramon Planes informed of his desire to step down from the post.

The 54-year-old has been with Catalan club since 2018 and had recently agreed on a two-year extension after Joan Laporta was re-elected as the president. During his time in charge, Planes has been responsible for key signings like Pedri and Ronald Araujo at the club.

However, he is now believed to have decided to move on in search of a new challenge, with Barca now on the lookout for a replacement. Director of football, Mateu Alemany, has already begun the search for a new technical secretary.

Now, Javi Miguel of Diario AS is claiming that newly-appointed manager Xavi Hernandez has a specific name in his mind for the role. As per the journalist, the 41-year-old Barcelona head coach wants his former teammate and captain, Carles Puyol, to be named the next technical secretary of the club.

One of the greatest captains in the history of Barcelona, Puyol is a legend at the club in the footballing world. The 43-year-old was a key part of the super-successful Barca side Pep Guardiola built, captaining the team through one of their most glorious periods.

Puyol hung up his boots as a player back in 2014, following which he took up the job of executive assistant of then-sporting director, Andoni Zubizaretta, but resigned in early 2015. The 2010 FIFA World Cup winner was approached by Barca for the sporting director role back in September 2019, but had turned it down.

The Catalans, though, could make a renewed approach to bring the club icon back to Camp Nou as the new technical secretary, at the insistence of Xavi. And, Javi Miguel adds that Puyol may be willing to consider the challenge and return to the club.

There are reports that another ex-Barcelona star, Marc Overmars, could also be considered for the position. So, it remains to be seen who the Blaugrana decide to appoint.
