Liverpool must sign £70m South American stunner

Liverpool need more attacking depth and sporting director Michael Edwards’ favourite player at the club might hint at the type of attacker the Reds will sign up front.

In his open letter to the Anfield faithful, he said: “One of the other questions I always get asked is ‘Who was/is your favourite player?’

“That’s a really difficult question to answer so I won’t even try. All I will say is my dog is called Bobby.”

It is no surprise that a player like Roberto Firmino, sneakily alluded to by Edwards, is his favourite. Especially when his work for the club is so heavily dictated by stats and the underlying numbers that inform them who to sign.

The former Hoffenheim star is far more than a “defensive striker” which is what rival fans seem to consider him as. His role for Liverpool is much more than that, even if his defensive contributions are vital to the way the Reds operate.

Which is why I think someone like Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez could be an option for Liverpool going forward, with Firmino already 30 and not getting any younger.

Diogo Jota has excelled in a central role for the Reds this season yet he can also serve as cover for Sadio Mane. However, if Liverpool want a dedicated no.9 to come in with the ability to play as a false nine, Martinez is the best option out there.

Last season, the Argentine scored 19 goals and assisted 11 – displaying the same unique blend of clinical finishing and creativity that Firmino became known for in the 2017/18 season when he scored 27 goals and assisted 17.

I think Martinez, valued at £70million, would be a fantastic heir to Firmino if Jurgen Klopp has any plans to replace the 30-year-old.
