Barcelona’s hunt for a new striker in January seems to have taken them to Arsenal, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang emerging as the latest player on the club’s radar.
The Catalan heavyweights are scouring the market for a new No. 9 considering that Sergio Aguero is indefinitely sidelined, Memphis Depay has succumbed to an injury and Luuk de Jong is out of favour.
Numerous forwards have been linked with a move to Camp Nou ahead of the January transfer window. And El Nacional has added the name of Arsenal captain Aubameyang to the ever-growing list of targets for Barca.
The Gabonese international is going through a rough patch at Arsenal and has had some disciplinary issues, which led to him being dropped out of the squad for the Gunners’ weekend Premier League clash against Southampton on Saturday.
Manager Mikel Arteta is not entirely happy with his main striker’s form or behaviour. At the same time, the ex-Borussia Dortmund star’s contract with the north Londoners runs out in eighteen months, an exit could be worked out either in January or at the end of the season.
And, the report claims that Aubameyang would be very much open to the possibility of moving to Barcelona should Xavi Hernandez come calling. The 32-year-old did not have the best of the campaigns in 2020/21, while his form in the current season has been nothing to write home about either.
Indeed, the Gunners’ skipper has netted just four goals in ten Premier League matches in 2021/22, scoring once every 260 minutes. Those are underwhelming returns for a player who, not long ago, was regarded as one of the most lethal marksmen in Europe.
With his form on the wane, and given the wages that he could command, Barcelona may well be better off investing in a younger centre-forward rather than going for Aubameyang. However, should Xavi decide to go after him, the Gabonese international would be happy to make the jump to Camp Nou.
