PSG will wear a special gold-tinted kit against Ligue 1 side Monaco on Sunday

The shirt celebrates Lionel Messi’s record-breaking seventh Ballon d’Or win

The 34-year-old pipped Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski to the award

Paris Saint-Germain will wear a special gold-tinted kit against Monaco to celebrate Lionel Messi’s record-breaking seventh Ballon d’Or win.

The 34-year-old – who helped Argentina win the Copa America for the first time since 1993 in the summer – pipped Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski to the award at the Theatre du Chatelet last month.

To celebrate the striker’s achievement, PSG have designed a limited edition kit that will consist of their traditional blue home strip with gold numbers and names.

The PSG star was expected to lift the award once again but was up against some impressive talent.

The other nominees included Mohamed Salah and Lewandowski, while Jorginho was also tipped for the coveted prize after winning both the Champions League with Chelsea and Euro 2020 with Italy.

Some believe Lewandowski should have been handed the award after last year’s ceremony was scrapped due to fears around the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lewandowski won the Champions League and scored 55 goals in 47 games in the 2019-20 campaign but lost out to Messi for the prestigious award.

Despite some criticising the decision to crown Messi as the winner, the Argentine was delighted to have won the award.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the 34-year-old said: ‘I’m really proud to win the France Football Ballon d’Or once again.

‘It’s incredible to win it for the seventh time. I would like to thank my family, my friends and all the people who follow me and always support me, because without them I couldn’t have done it’.

While the club’s Chairman and CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi said: ‘I would like to warmly congratulate Leo.

‘The club is immensely proud that one of our players has won this most prestigious and coveted title.

‘Leo is making football history once again. Along with all our supporters around the world, we are delighted to be able to enjoy one of most iconic footballers of all time in the Rouge & Bleu shirt.’
