Guardiola offered chance to sign PSG defender as ‘bench option’, source claims

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is reportedly mulling over an offer from PSG to sign unwanted full-back Layvin Kurzawa.

The 29-year-old defender is looking for a move away from PSG after being frozen out of the first team by Mauricio Pochettino. He has been at the club since 2015, but is a long way down the pecking order and needs a move to revitalise his career.

As such, it was no surprise to see him strongly linked with a move to Chelsea earlier this week. Thomas Tuchel’s side are suffering from a lack of depth in both full-back positions at present. On the right-hand side of defence, Reece James is on the sidelines. Meanwhile, on the left, Ben Chilwell is nursing an ACL injury.

However, according to RTL France journalist Baptiste Durieux, Kurzawa has been directly offered to City as a potential bench option for Guardiola and as cover to his existing options.

City have Joao Cancelo and Oleksandr Zinchenko as left-back options, but the arrival of Kurzawa could give them another option.

And with Guardiola considering squad options only at this time, the offer of Kurzawa may prove too good an option to pass up.

Layvin Kurzawa viewed as squad option

The Blues are 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League. As such, they appear confident of securing the fourth title in seven seasons under Guardiola’s leadership.

However, their aspirations of adding both the FA Cup – and more importantly – the Champions League to their haul will be tested by injuries and the ongoing Covid situation.

As such, Durieux reckons a move for Kurzawa is reportedly ‘under consideration’ by Guardiola.

Despite being contracted at PSG until 2024, the Ligue 1 giants are only seeking a small fee to take the player from their hands. And having played just nine minutes of first-team football this season, any sort of approach from City is likely to be accepted.

Man City eye ‘natural fit’ Nico Gonzalez
Meanwhile, a report puts the Citizens in the frame to sign Nico Gonzalez from Barcelona.

He is a 20-year-old central midfielder who only made his senior debut in August. However, it has been a rapid rise for Nico as he is now an important member of the first team.

The Spain U21 international has featured in Barcelona’s last 11 league fixtures. And Gonzales caught the eye by scoring in consecutive games against Osasuna and Elche.

Nico’s impressive performances have clearly alerted Guardiola. The manager apparently sees him as a ‘natural fit’ at the Etihad despite his lack of experience.

Guardiola wants City to launch a raid on his former club this summer. However, a deal will not be cheap. Nico’s release clause stands at an eye-watering £430m and his contract runs until 2024
