Man City in advance stage to sign striker for £68m after major development – sources

Man City are in pole position to sign Erling Haaland this summer – thanks to his father, Football Insider understands.

The Premier League leaders are assessing the market for a forward capable of leading the front line and the Borussia Dortmund goal machine is their number one target.

A City source has told Football Insider the club and manager Pep Guardiola are big admirers of Haaland, 21, and they will be supported by the Abu Dhabi owners in a concerted pursuit.

Intriguingly, the striker’s father Alf Inge Haaland is believed to be telling his son to join City ahead of his other elite suitors.

The former midfielder, 49, spent three years at City at the turn of the millennium and is convinced it would be the perfect move this summer.

The groundwork is already being laid for a deal amid what will be fierce competition.

Haaland will be available for £68million in the summer due to a release clause in his Dortmund contract.

That is far from a huge sum for one of the world’s most sought-after players and is more than £30m less than the club-record fee paid for Jack Grealish last summer.

However, the competition for Haaland’s signature is so intense that he will be able to command a mammoth salary that would most likely make him the Premier League’s top earner.

Football Insider has been told that Man City are currently the most likely of not only the English big guns to prise Haaland from Germany, but also ahead of clubs like Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

City are in the market for a blue-chip striker and have paved the way with the £55million sale of Ferran Torres to Barcelona.

Haaland is having another goal-drenched campaign in Germany.

He has 23 goals and six assists from just 20 matches this season, in which he has missed 10 Bundesliga and Champions League games due to injury.
