Report: Liverpool ready to move again to sign 22-year-old, just two years after deciding against buying him

Liverpool are now ready to make their move for Lille striker Jonathan David, who wants to leave the French club.

That’s according to a report in le10Sport who claim that The Reds, along with Arsenal, are best placed to sign the 22-year-old this summer.

Arsenal are reported to have made David ‘a priority’. Whilst Liverpool are ‘ready to position themselves.’

PSG are another side credited with an interest in David. But the report claims that interest in the striker is stronger in England.

David is having another good season for Lille. Only three players have scored more than his 13 goals in Ligue 1 and he has a further four goals across all competitions.

That includes three in his first taste of the Champions League.

The Canadian helped Lille to the title last season in his first year at the club. He was the second top scorer for Les Dogues as they won the league for the first time in 10 years.

Liverpool have been known admirers of David for some time. In fact, The Athletic reported in 2020 that David was part of a three-man attacker shortlist for The Reds in that summer’s transfer window.

Liverpool eventually settled on Diogo Jota and what a signing he has been. But David, who was at Genk at the time, and Watford’s Ismaila Sarr were also considered.

David has since impressed in France. With The Reds still on the lookout for long-term replacements for their forward line, it isn’t a surprise to see his name crop up once more.

It may have been a move too soon to jump from Genk to Liverpool in 2020. Now that David has had chance to settle in at a top European league, he could be ready for a move to The Reds.

David has also garnered more experience at international level in the past two years.

His strike-rate of 20 goals in 27 caps for Canada is mightily impressive. He is part of a ‘golden generation’ of Candians who are looking good to qualify for their first World Cup since 1986.

As someone who can operate as link-up player or as an out-and-out striker, he could be a good option for Liverpool. One to keep an eye on for sure.
