AS Roma’s expensive demands for Tammy Abraham is a theme Arsenal will have to become accustomed to this summer.
Arsenal must be prepared to overspend on a striker this summer due to clubs realizing the desperation from Edu to sign a forward ahead of next season. This has been proven with AS Roma’s latest asking price for Tammy Abraham.
According to the Daily Mail, Jose Mourinho’s side has set a £100m price tag on Abraham. This follows reports that emerged which suggested interest in the striker from the Premier League had intensified.
The Gunners are in desperate need of a striker and clubs are starting to take advantage of this. An expensive price was also quoted for Alexander Isak in the January transfer window and this could become a regular theme for them.
Arsenal will likely need two new strikers in the summer transfer window, with Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah’s days at the club looking increasingly numbered. Both players’ contracts are set to expire at the end of the season and they have been linked with a move away.
Crystal Palace is admirers of Nketiah and Patrick Vieira failed to bring him in at the start of this season, with the two clubs unable to agree on a fee. This would no longer be an issue come June.
If he does depart from the club along with Lacazette, then Folarin Balogun would be the only remaining striker at the club, meaning two striker signings may be required to combat the need for greater squad depth if Arsenal secure a return to the Champions League.
Arsenal was heavily linked to Isak to solve these shortages, who is valued at just £36m by Transfermarkt. But a deal never managed to materialize in the January transfer window due to reported concerns over his £75m release clause.
He currently plays for Real Sociedad and has scored 40 goals in 110 appearances for the La Liga side, showing plenty of promise along the way. But it would be risky to bring him in for such a high price, seeing as though he is yet to experience Champions League football or compete for the biggest trophies.
He has also struggled to score regularly this season with just four goals in 22 La Liga games, which does not justify such a high price tag.
It now seems that Roma is also pushing an unjustifiable price tag for Abraham. The Englishman has been excellent for the Serie A side this campaign having scored 14 goals in the league, which is more than any other English player so far this season, but a good run of form doesn’t mean he is worth triple figures.
Due to the clear need for a striker, it means that Arsenal must prepare to be taken advantage of by clubs that own their targets. On the plus side, the Gunners have created a lot of space after a mass exodus of players in the January transfer window, so they should be well equipped to pay what is necessary for the ideal forward signing ahead of next season.
