Club ready to put £55m release clause in Liverpool target’s contract, player said to have ‘no weaknesses’

RB Leipzig is ready to put a release clause in Liverpool to target Christopher Nkunku’s contract, according to reports. The player has been sensational this season.

This comes from Sky Germany. They claim that RB Leipzig hopes to secure Christopher Nkunku to a new contract in the coming weeks.

The most interesting part of that is the inclusion of a release clause. Teams can trigger it for around £55m but, importantly, only from 2023. The deal would essentially guarantee Leipzig another year of their star player, as well as a large fee down the line.

Nkunku can also guarantee himself a transfer at some point, though – almost certainly next year. It’s a move that seems to work for all parties and, as far as we see it, that includes Liverpool.

Liverpool like Christopher Nkunku

This aligns with the recent talk out of Leipzig that they won’t give the player up this summer. They appear to be intent on keeping him for at least another year and the release clause confirms that.

Clubs want Nkunku, though, and that supposedly includes Liverpool. ESPN recently claimed that they’re watching the player and almost certainly love what they see.

That’s because Nkunku is having a world of a season, scoring 30 goals and assisting another 14. The fact that he’s not even an out-and-out striker shows just how good the Frenchman is. He has, in the words of former boss Jesse Marsch, “no weaknesses”,

It also means that there may be no better player on the planet to replace Roberto Firmino. Liverpool’s no.9 sees his deal expire in 2023 when Nkunku will be available. That False 9 role, one Firmino has perfected, is a fairly unique one and it makes him difficult to replace.

In Nkunku, though, Liverpool surely has their best possible option. The talent lines up, the position lines up, and importantly, the timing does, too.

£55m could even look like a bargain by then. This is almost certainly one to watch.
