Manchester City out to break Premier League record against Newcastle United

Manchester City will be looking to break a Premier League scoring record when they welcome Newcastle United to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

At the time of writing, the Citizens currently sit top of the table, but if second-placed Liverpool were to beat Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday night, Pep Guardiola‘s men would require maximum points against the Magpies to finish the weekend at the summit.

City head into Sunday’s game off the back of a heartbreaking Champions League exit to Real Madrid in midweek, but they will be confident of returning to winning ways against Newcastle as they have won each of their last 12 home league meetings and have lost only one of their last 28 league games against them.

The Citizens have also had plenty of joy in front of goals against the Magpies over the years, scoring at least once in each of their last 26 Premier League encounters.

Should City find the net on Sunday, they would boast the longest run of one team scoring against another in Premier League history, surpassing both Arsenal (26 against Leeds United) and Manchester United (also 26 against Leicester City).

City cruised to victory the last time they faced Newcastle, winning 4-0 at St James’ Park in December, with Ruben DiasJoao CanceloRiyad Mahrez, and Raheem Sterling all on the scoresheet.
