Manchester City suffer Aymeric Laporte, Fernandinho injury blows

Manchester City has suffered two more injury blows as center-back Aymeric Laporte and midfielder Fernandinho were both forced off in the 5-1 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday night.

Both players sustained knocks in the second half at Molineux, with Laporte taken off just after the hour mark, while Fernandinho – who played alongside the former at center-back – was replaced in the 77th minute.

The city is already having to cope without defensive trio Ruben DiasKyle Walker, and John Stones for the rest of the season due to injury, and now two more first-team players are at risk of missing the final two league games of the campaign.

Speaking to mancity.com, manager Pep Guardiola said: “Well, apparently it doesn’t look good.

“I would say there are some muscular problems for Fernandinho, and it will be difficult for Sunday.

“[Aymeric] had a tough knock on his knee, and we have just four days so we will see how they recover for Sunday.

“[There are] two weeks left, it was a brilliant performance from all the players. All of them. They implemented our movement perfectly and made good runs for the people up front. We were good. It’s an important victory.”

Nathan Ake – who came on for the final half-hour to replace Laporte at Molineux – is currently City’s only fit central defender heading into Sunday’s Premier League trip to West Ham United.

The city has restored its three-point advantage over Liverpool at the top of the table, after four goals from Kevin De Bruyne and a late strike from Raheem Sterling helped the Citizens secure their fifth consecutive league win.
