Liverpool contacts a €60 million technical wizard

Liverpool has reportedly made contact over a potential transfer for midfielder Matheus Nunes.

The Portuguese international has been linked with a transfer to the Premier League for some time now after recently shining for Sporting.

The information comes days after Jurgen Klopp replied to allegations that they needed more goals from midfield by breaking his silence on their transfers.

The 23-year-old Nunes has drawn interest from Chelsea and Wolves and has a £50.6 million (60 million euros) release clause.

Reports from Portugal and Jornal de Noticias claim that Liverpool isn’t the only club to be interested as Wolverhampton Wanderers were the first club to ask Sporting about Nunes, followed by Chelsea.

He believes that the Liga Nos giants do not want to sell him having already offloaded Palhinha to Fulham for £17m (20 million euros) this summer.

Nunes also has a World Cup place to secure and staying at Sporting is guaranteed football ahead of the winter competition in Qatar.

He also signed a new contract last season with the Primeira Liga club that will expire in the summer of 2026 and the club will not open negotiations for the sale of Matheus Nunes for anything below £33.7m (40 million euros).

Klopp defended his midfield options when questioned in a press conference at the start of their pre-season tour in Asia.

The club has Jordan Henderson, Thiago, Fabinho, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, Harvey Elliot, Curtis Jones, Fabio Carvalho, and Tyler Morton to call on but fans are still calling for a midfield signing.

However, according to Whoscored, Thiago was only able to play a part in 45% of Liverpool’s Premier League season last year, while Naby Keita was available for only 34%.

While there are possibilities that combine experience and raw skill, it is obvious that there is a reliability problem, and it might make a big impact over the season.

Jude Bellingham and Nicolo Barella have both been strongly linked to them, although neither move is expected to happen this summer.

Klopp might be obliged to look for a midfielder again, but someone would probably have to move aside.
