Graeme Souness, a Liverpool legend, has issued a Financial Fair Play warning to Premier League title rivals.

Liverpool legends Graeme Souness and Micah Richards discussed Newcastle United’s chances of finishing in the top six in the latest Sky Bet ‘Big Questions’ episode.

Micah Richards’ questioning of Liverpool legend Graeme Souness on Financial Fair Play in the latest Sky Bet ‘Big Questions’ episode irritated him.

The pair, along with the rest of the panel, were debating whether Newcastle could challenge the top six under their new ownership this season. Souness compared the model to Manchester City’s and stated that he “expects big things” from Eddie Howe’s team.

However, when asked about FFP by fellow pundit Richards, who played for City for over 240 games, Liverpool legend Souness didn’t hold back.

“It’s like Man City,” he said, according to Sky Bet. “As long as the owners are interested, Manchester City will not go anywhere.” As long as the people who own that football club want to promote Man City, they will be one of the best teams in the world.

“Then you’ve got the new owners at Newcastle where their owners don’t play second to anyone. So if they want to dominate, you can expect big things at Newcastle.”

Richards jumped in, asking: “What about Financial Fair Play?”

“Are you the correct person who should be asking that?” Souness retorted. Excuse me, but are you the right person to ask that question?

“I believe one of your board members stated that ‘we’ll just be in the courts for 40 years with UEFA.’ “I’m not sure that’s the right question for you to ask.”

So far, Newcastle has had a relatively quiet transfer window, with only three new arrivals. Nick Pope and Matt Targett have both joined, and Lille defender Sven Botman is their most recent addition.

The Magpies, on the other hand, will look to improve on their 11th-place finish last season and eventually challenge the current top six.
