Tottenham make an approach for a player who is ‘distracting’ him – Desire to return to the Premier League has hampered talks with other clubs.

There was a time when Tottenham appeared to be serious about signing Barcelona’s Memphis Depay.

A number of articles were published about Spurs’ interest in the Dutchman, but they quickly faded as the club focused on other targets.

Nicolo Zaniolo was one of them, but the latest news suggests the deal is off, as Tottenham is unwilling to spend €50 million upfront on the Italian.

This appears to have led them back to Depay, with Gazzetta dello Sport devoting a significant amount of column space to the subject, as Juventus is also interested.

It is stated that “the arrival of Fabio Paratici and Antonio Conte on the Tottenham scene imposed a pause for reflection in the dialogue between the Juventus leaders and the entourage of Memphis Depay.”

On Tuesday, there was a “great wave of optimism” about a move to Italy, but “the idea of being able to return to the Premier League is distracting him.”

That’s where Tottenham come in, and while he hasn’t actively knocked on Barcelona’s door as they did in January, Paratici is still there, making ‘one of the many inquiries’ he likes to do, regarded for the time being as a ‘flirt, nothing more.

However, such is Spurs’ and the Premier League’s power that even such a minor intervention caused a “substantial” halt in talks with Juventus, as the intervention “fatally ruined the waters.”

We’ll have to wait and see if Tottenham comes back stronger the next time, or if Paratici is just messing with his former club to keep the Depay option open in case he needs it later.
