Leicester City’s released goalkeeper receives a Premier League transfer.

Everton signed the 37-year-old shot-stopper on a short-term contract after injuries to Jordan Pickford and Andy Lonergan left them short of goalkeepers.

Everton has signed former Leicester City goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic on a free transfer.

After injuries hit Frank Lampard’s squad, the veteran shot-stopper, who was released by City this summer, has signed a short-term contract at Goodison Park. Jordan Pickford, the first-choice keeper, is out until after the international break, and third-choice Andy Lonergan is expected to be out for a few months.

As a result of these injuries, the Toffees’ only senior available goalkeeper is Asmir Begovic. That means Jakupovic will almost certainly be on the bench when Everton faces West Ham on Sunday.

Jakupovic was let go by City in the summer after five years at the club. He did not play a single first-team fixture in the last four of those seasons as he played back-up to Kasper Schmeichel and Danny Ward.

After the same goalkeeping unit for four years, City underwent changes this summer, with Schmeichel sold to Nice after a decorated decade at the club. Ward has not stepped up to become number one, with Daniel Iversen returning from a loan spell to take over as number two.

Former Cardiff keeper Alex Smithies was brought in as number three on a free transfer in one of City’s only two summer signings. Smithies’ arrival allowed City to prepare for the future by sending young prospects Jakub Stolarczyk and Brad Young out on loan to Fleetwood and Notts County respectively.

If Jakupovic features for Everton this weekend, it will be his first appearance since starting for City in the final game of the 2017-18 season, a 5-4 loss to Tottenham at Wembley. The 37-year-old’s last prolonged period in goal came the season before when he made 22 Premier League starts for Hull, his excellent performances nearly saving them from relegation.
