Tottenham Hotspur could earn up to £26 million if they meet Sporting Lisbon’s £52 million release clause for English winger Marcus Edwards, who has a 50% sell-on clause in his contract.

Spurs are owed 50% of whatever Sporting receives if they sell Edwards, according to the Telegraph, with Tottenham obtaining such a clause after negotiations with the attacker’s former club Vitoria Guimaraes, who signed the youngster in 2019.

That original deal to Vitoria saw Tottenham have a 50% sell-on clause should the Portuguese side sell Edwards, however, Spurs managed to transfer this option into the winger’s move to Sporting, a decision that is now starting to look like something of a masterstroke from Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici given the forward’s form this season.

Edwards tore Tottenham to pieces in Sporting’s 2-0 win against Spurs this week in the UEFA Champions League, and the 23-year-old’s form in the league has been just as impressive, with the former north London academy wonderkid bagging two goals and two assists in domestic fixtures.

Indeed, Tottenham could regret letting Edwards go given how impressive the trickster has been in Portugal, however, the club’s decision to transfer his 50% sell-on clause to Sporting is nothing short of genius from the Premier League side, who could be set for a huge payday in the next 18 months.

As we know, Edwards is impressing with Sporting this campaign, and if the winger can maintain this form both in the league and in Europe, there’s a strong chance that a club could spend a huge fee to sign the forward in January or next summer, with Tottenham set to benefit hugely from any sort of deal.

TOTTENHAM HAS HIT THE LOTTERY WITH A 50% SELL-ON FEE FOR MARCUS EDWARDS

Levy is known as a stern negotiator when it comes to dealing off the pitch, yet even the biggest critic of the Tottenham chairman would never have expected the Spurs figurehead to mastermind such a great deal when it comes to Edwards and Sporting.

To get a 50% sell-on fee after already leaving the club he left Tottenham for is some quite astounding business from Levy, and for Spurs, they are sure to benefit hugely from this deal in the coming years when Edwards is eventually sold for a high fee.
