James Maddison ‘decision to make’ amid fresh Newcastle and Tottenham claim

Tottenham and Newcastle United are set to slug it out to sign James Maddison in the summer, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Respected Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed Newcastle United lodged two official bids for Maddison during the summer, both of which were rejected by Leicester City.

Tottenham was another side linked with the Leicester playmaker and Jones says Maddison is going to “have a decision to make” when the current campaign finishes.

Former Leicester City striker Gary Lineker has sent a message to England manager Gareth Southgate after the Three Lions fell to a 1-0 defeat to Italy.

England was beaten in the San Siro on Friday evening to confirm their relegation to Group B of the Nations League. The defeat also means Southgate’s side has not won for five games – their longest run without a victory in eight years.

Southgate has come under huge pressure after June’s 4-0 home defeat to Hungary and faced further questions after his squad selection last week. The former Middlesbrough boss excluded James Maddison again, despite the Leicester City midfielder having a good start to the season.

Mauricio Pochettino ‘targeting’ Premier League job

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino is reportedly targeting returning to either La Liga, the Premier League, or debuting in Serie A when returning to management after talk concerning him and Leicester City.

Amid heavy pressure on City manager Rodgers, though no sacking is imminent, Pochettino is being put in the frame during this international break by plenty of pundits. The club has been urged to approach the former Paris Saint-Germain boss should they open up a vacancy, while the manager himself has been told that he isn’t too big for Leicester.

Pochettino has been out of work for approaching three months after leaving the French capital in early June after just 18 months in charge at the Parc des Princes. Amid reports that Nice is considering an approach to replace the under-fire Lucien Favre, the manager’s preferences are apparently elsewhere.

Former Burnley manager Sean Dyche has outlined what has to be “right” at his next club amid links with Leicester City.

The 51-year-old had been tipped as a possible replacement for Brendan Rodgers at the King Power Stadium after the City boss came under huge pressure last weekend. The Foxes are bottom of the Premier League table after suffering six straight defeats – the latest being a 6-2 thrashing at Tottenham.

It’s understood that Rodgers will take charge of City’s next game – against Nottingham Forest on October 3 – after earning backing from the club’s owners with his previous successes. However, that hasn’t stopped various names from being listed as possible alternatives, and Dyche is said to be under consideration.
