Leicester City coach left ‘shellshocked’ by ‘dismal display’

The Under-21s manager has issued his verdict after his charges were thrashed 7-0 by Fulham in Premier League 2 on Monday night at the club’s Seagrave training base.

Leicester City Under-21s boss Ben Petty said he was left “shellshocked” by his side’s 7-0 home humbling by Fulham on Monday night.

Even with senior center-back Jannik Vestergaard at the heart of the defense, City’s youngsters, impressive in recent outings, had a night to forget. Vestergaard did too, opening the scoring for Fulham’s youngsters with an own goal, the Dane having turned down a move to Craven Cottage in the summer.

Last week, City Under-21s drew 2-2 away at Chelsea and then produced a comeback from two goals down to beat Bradford’s senior side on penalties in the Papa John’s Trophy, but they fell well short at the club’s Seagrave training ground.

With midfielder Sammy Braybrooke in the first team and captain Lewis Brunt injured in the warm-up, City was already missing a couple of key players, but Kasey McAteer and Paul Appiah were both knocked out during the game.

“We’re pretty shellshocked,” Petty told LCFC TV. “I definitely wasn’t expecting that performance, especially after the two great away performances at Chelsea and Bradford.

“We just spoke to the players there about the highs and lows of football. We’ve had that in the space of six days. Winning at Bradford on penalties and a great performance and then serving up a dismal display tonight, if I’m honest, and finding it difficult against a very good Fulham side.

“We’ve got to take it on the chin. It’s a massive disappointment but we’ll recover well and go again. We’ll be back in sync for Sheffield Wednesday next week I’m sure.”

The result means City’s Under-21s sit 10th of 14 in the Premier League 2 table, four points above the relegation zone. Next up, they travel to Sheffield Wednesday in their final EFL Trophy group match next Tuesday. They need to win and hope Bradford fails to beat Burton, to progress.
