Tottenham want a club-record fee, and Conte believes the star will be the ‘future’ of another Premier League club.

Tottenham is reportedly battling Manchester United in the race to sign AS Roma striker Tammy Abraham – a player that Antonio Conte once claimed would be the “future” of rivals, Chelsea, having come through the Blues academy.

Abraham, 25, is in his second season at Roma. Last season, he starred for Jose Mourinho’s side – scoring 27 goals in 52 games, and laying on six assists. But this time around, he is struggling to replicate the same form – scoring only twice.

Nevertheless, CalcioMercato claim Tottenham and Manchester United want to sign the 11-time England international. That is despite reports from the Mail in the summer claiming Roma wants as much as £100million to sell the strike.

Speaking about Abraham having worked with him during his breakthrough years at Chelsea, Conte was impressed by the “potential” of Abraham. Speaking in a 2016 press conference as Chelsea’s boss, Conte gave a glowing verdict.

“Abraham is a young player who is the future for Chelsea, for sure. He’s very young. We decided to send him to play every game and get experience, then come back for us. He has great potential in the technical and physical aspects.”

Ultimately, Abraham will only be targeted if Harry Kane departs. With Tottenham on the precipice in terms of homegrown talent in their side, they might have to replace the England skipper with a homegrown player.

So, Abraham fits the bill. Indeed, his £100million asking price could reduce somewhat, if clubs approach Roma now. He has struggled to replicate last season’s form. But he would still easily be a club-record signing for Tottenham.

It all depends on Kane. Linked strongly with Bayern Munich, Kane still has a contract at Tottenham until 2024. There is talk that Kane could sign a new deal with the London club – but that might depend on Conte’s future as Spurs boss.
