Leicester City could lose key figure amid surprise exit link

The former center-back has been a member of Brendan Rodgers’ team at the King Power Stadium since his arrival from Celtic in 2019.

According to reports, Leicester City’s first-team coach Kolo Toure is a candidate to take over as Wigan Athletic manager.

The former Ivorian international has been a member of the City’s staff since 2019, following Brendan Rodgers down from Celtic. But he has always had ambitions of becoming a manager in his own right, and that opportunity may have now arisen.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Championship side Wigan, who recently sacked Leam Richardson after an eight-game winless run, are keen on appointing Toure as their new boss. Latics owner Talal Al Hammad is said to have flown into London to wrap up the appointment.

Wigan, who won League One last season, have slipped into the Championship relegation zone after a poor run of form. Richardson was relieved of his duties a week ago, with former City boss Rob Kelly taking over as caretaker.

Toure looks to be the man they are targeting to get them out of trouble. Since retiring as a player at Celtic, Toure has been a member of Rodgers’ coaching staff, working with the squad throughout the week, and then specifically with the defenders on a matchday.

But he has never hidden his desire to be a manager. He has said his dream is to win the World Cup as manager of an African nation.

Toure had a distinguished career as a player before moving into coaching, winning the Premier League with Arsenal and Manchester City, including as part of the Gunners’ unbeaten season. He also won the Africa Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast, who he earned 120 caps for.

City nearly saw their other first-team coach Adam Sadler depart earlier this season after he was targeted by new Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick as a potential assistant manager. However, Sadler stayed put.
