‘Do better,’ says Ian Wright of a £22 million World Cup star who has reportedly been offered to Tottenham.

Ian Wright was critical of Tottenham Hotspur transfer target and Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy for his recent World Cup outing during Senegal’s 2-0 defeat to Holland in Qatar.

There wasn’t much between Louis van Gaal’s well-organized unit and the energetic champions of Africa, up until the last ten minutes of their World Cup opener.

The sought-after PSV star Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock before Mendy proceeded to have a moment to forget minutes later which just killed off the game.

The struggling Chelsea stopper parried a pretty tame shot into the path of former Everton midfielder Davy Klaassen and he put in the rebound.

Speaking to ITV Sport, Wright felt that the 30-year-old should have done much better with the initial shot given the quality he has in his locker.

For me, the goalkeeper has to do better with that,” said Wright. “Well done to Klassen for following it up. But I think, a goalkeeper of his caliber should be saving that or pushing that into a safer zone.”

MENDY OFFERED TO TOTTENHAM

It wasn’t so long ago that Mendy was being tipped as one of the best keepers in the world and his success with Chelsea – winning the Champions League – was proof of that.

But the £22 million star (Sky Sports) has started to fall off a cliff for some time now and there aren’t any signs that his form will return.

With Tottenham looking for a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris, would they want to knock on the door for Mendy? There are suggestions he has been offered to Antonio Conte’s side.
